Husson football rallies for win on Senior Day

November 9, 2019

The Husson University Eagles rallied from a 23-6 halftime deficit on Saturday afternoon to defeat the visiting Salve Regina Seahawks 29-26 in overtime in Commonwealth Coast Conference football on Senior Day at the Winkin Complex in Bangor.

Husson (4-5, 4-2 CCC) scored first on a Tyler Halls 31 yard touchdown reception from David Morrison in the first quarter. Devin Pickett missed the extra point. Salve Regina (3-6, 2-4) would score the next 23 points. The Seahawks took over the lead in the first when Joey Mauriello scored on a five yard touchdown run. The guests then extended the lead outscoring the Eagles 16-0 in the second quarter. Max Devito caught touchdown passes of 24 and 12 yards from quarterback Tyler McGovern, and Angelo DiSanto added a 37 yard field goal to make it 23-6 at the half.

Husson began their comeback with a safety late in the third quarter with 1:40 left, followed by Halls second touchdown of the game on a 26 yard catch from Morrison just 38 seconds later to cut it to 23-15. The Eagles scored again just over five minutes into the fourth quarter when Halls reeled in his third touchdown. The 71 yard scoring play was followed by a two point conversion run by Keyshaun Robinson to make it 23-23. The Seahawks had a chance late in regulation but they were stopped for a turnover on downs by the Husson defense sending the game to overtime. DiSanto hit a 21 yard field goal on the first possession of overtime for Salve Regina for a three point lead, but the Eagles had the final score of the day when Morrison won the game with a six yard scoring toss to Aidan Hogan.

Morrison finished the day 19-43 passing for 320 yards, with four touchdowns and one interception. Robinson rushed 20 times for 71 yards, while Halls had his second huge game in row with eight receptions for 182 yards and three second half touchdowns. Hogan added five catches for 82 yards and the game winning touchdown in overtime. Frank Curran had nine tackles, while both Derok Barden and Michael Powell had eight a piece to lead the Husson defense. Brandon Williams and Nick Alvarez each had an interception.

Husson finishes the regular season next Saturday with a trip to Western New England (8-1, 6-0). WNE clinched the CCC title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Div III Football Tournament with a 35-0 win over Becker College on Saturday. The Eagles would likely need a win to even have a slight chance at an at-large bid to the NCAA playoffs.
