Maine hockey comes up just short at UMass-Lowell

November 9, 2019

Matt Brown scored a third period game winning goal and goaltender Tyler Wall made 38 saves Saturday night to lead the #14 UMass-Lowell Riverhawks to a 3-2 men’s Hockey East win over the Maine Black Bears at Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup opened the scoring in the game giving Maine a 1-0 with his sixth goal of the season at 3:42 of the first period. UMass-Lowell took the lead in a 4:37 span of the second period when Carl Berglund scored at 2:13, and Anthony Baxter made it 2-1 Riverhawks at 6:50. Mitch Fossier who scored the tying goal on Friday night in the third period would make it back to back nights. Fossier took a pass from Tim Doherty and fired a slapshot past Wall at 2:47 of period three to tie the game again 2-2. Just 1:32 later however, Brown took a feed right in front of the net and slipped it past Maine goaltender Jeremy Swayman for the game winner. The Black Bears had a powerplay with 17 seconds left, and also pulled Swayman for a 6 on 4 advantage but couldn’t come up with the equalizer late.

Swayman made 27 saves in the loss as Maine had a four game unbeaten streak snapped. JD Greenway and Cam Spicer joined Doherty with an assist each on the night. The Black Bears went 0-4 on the powerplay, while the Riverhawks went 0-2. Maine drops to 5-3-2 overall, 2-2-2 in Hockey East. UMass-Lowell improves to 7-2-3, 4-0-2. Maine will return home to host the UNH Wildcats next Friday and Saturday at Alfond Arena.
