Nationally ranked UMA women notch seventh win

SOUTH PORTLAND, Me- The University of Maine-Augusta women’s basketball team got a game high 28 points from Madline Suhr on Sunday afternoon en route to a 64-53 win over Springfield Techical College in a non-conference game played at a neutral site at Southern Maine Community College.

The UMA Moose, ranked #6 in the country in last weeks USCAA Division II coaches poll,  rallied in the second half to move to 7-2 on the season. STC (5-4) took an early 6-2 lead, before the Moose jumped in front on a Suhr jumper 10-8 later in the first. UMA led 15-9 after one quarter. The hosts held an eight point lead several times in the second, before the Rams scored the final four points of the first half to cut it to four at the break.

A Selena Pereia jumper gave STC back the lead with 3:26 to go in the third at 37-36. The Rams went up four, before a late Autumn Sudsbury layup for the Moose cut it to one again headed for the fourth quarter. Both teams exchanged one and two point leads early in the fourth, until Suhr made a layup with 6:32 to play put UMA up for good. The layup by Suhr was part of a 10-0 run to put the Moose up eight, and five is as close as STC would get the rest of the way as UMA built it to their largest lead of the game late at 13.

Suhr filled up the stat sheet adding eight rebounds, four assists, three steals, and five blocks to her point total shooting 12-22 from the floor. Sydney Leblanc added 12 points, four rebounds, and seven assists. Sudsbury had a double double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Essence Richardson had 22 points and seven rebounds for Springfield Tech, while Pereia added 13 points. UMA will host UMaine-Machias on Thursday night in Augusta. The Clippers are coming off a big win on Sunday as well, knocking off the #1 team in the poll in previously undefeated Southern Community College in overtime.
