Hampden boys use huge fourth quarter to run past Cony

December 16, 2019

HAMPDEN, Maine- The Hampden Academy Broncos made a huge statement in Class A North Monday night using a 30 point fourth quarter to pull away from the Cony Rams 79-62 at the Stable in a boys basketball game matchup of two undefeated teams.

Hampden (4-0) started fast using baskets by Braydon Cole, TJ Henaghen, and a three pointer by Andy Raye to take a 7-0 lead just 1:32 into the game forcing a Cony timeout. The Rams settled in after the Broncos built the lead to 12-4, but HA still led 14-11 after the opening eight minutes. Cony (3-1) took their first lead when Luke Briggs made a steal and got it to Brayden Barbeau for a layup to make it 24-23 with 2:50 left in the first half. The visitors led 26-23 before the Broncos scored five straight to take the lead back, but the resilient Rams got a three point play from Briggs to take a 29-28 advantage into the break.

Hampden again pushed back into the lead and lengthened it to 47-37 that included a thunderous slam by Henaghen off an ally oop pass from Mikey Raye. Cony again fought back though and a 10-2 run cut it to 49-47 Broncos headed to the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter is when the hosts took over sparked by three-point shots from A. Raye, Travis Czapiga, and two from Bryce Lausier. Cole also added eight in the quarter and Henaghen had six, including another dunk on a breakout by himself. The Broncos exploded by scoring the first 11 points and also outscoring the Rams 30-7 over the first five or so minutes to build the lead to 25. Both teams would empty the bench in the final 2:30 and Cony outscored HA 8-0 the rest of the way to make up the 17 point difference. Hampden coach Russ Bartlett said after the game, “The first half I think it took some time to get used to the way they (Cony) play. I was real happy with the way we started the game, but then we got too complacent and had some turnovers and too much dribbling it in the half court. Second half we took better care of the ball and game gets easier when you make shots, and we made shots in the fourth quarter”. On that 30 point fourth quarter Barlett added, “Obviously making a couple threes, we were attacking their pressure and we were getting layups. So our ability to take care of the ball was really the difference in the game”.

A. Raye was the leading scorer in the game with 22 points for Hampden. Henaghen had 21 points, six rebounds, and two blocks. Cole finished with 17 points and five rebounds. Lausier had a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while M. Raye had six points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Dakota Dearborn and Briggs each had 12 points for Cony. Leading scorer Simon McCormick was held in check with seven points and five steals. Kaleb Stred chipped in six points, while Kyle Douin and Isac Gammon each added five. Both teams play against Messalonskee in their next game. Cony will host the Eagles Thursday night, while Hampden is in Oakland next Monday.
