Big third quarter helps Central grab girls basketball win over George Stevens

CORINTH- Abi Allen scored 12 of her game high 18 points in the second half to lead the Central Red Devils to a 44-31 win over George Stevens on Thursday night.

It was a sluggish first half for both teams. They combined for 30 turnovers in the first 16 minutes as the Eagles held a 16-15 lead at intermission.

George Stevens expanded the lead to 23-18 on a Vanessa Sherwood three pointer early in the second half. Central took off from that point as they went on a 10-0 run that was capped by a three pointer from Allen with 2:15 remaining in the quarter. The Red Devils would expand the run to 16-3 and took a 34-26 lead heading into the final quarter.

Gabrielle Poulin (5) and Allen (4) combined for nine points in the fourth quarter to secure the win for the Red Devils.

Sherwood led the Eagles with 15 points. Sophia Biggie had seven points and 11 rebounds. Luna Perry-St. Peter filled up the stat sheet with four points, 12 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Evelyn Dagan added four points, while Jaiden Dennison made one free throw. George Stevens (2-4) will host Calais on Saturday.

Allen recorded five rebounds, three assists, three steals, and three blocks to go along with her game high 18 points. Emilee Cohen had 12 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Poulin scored eight points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Freshman Rylee Speed recorded six points, 11 rebounds, and four steals. Central (6-2) will host PCHS on Saturday.

Central out rebounded George Stevens 40-28. The Red Devils shot 13-30 from the free throw line, while the Eagles shot 12-17. Sherwood made 3 three pointers for the Eagles, Allen made three for the Red Devils.
