Husson men pull away from UMPI

Scott Lewis led four players in double figures on Friday night to lead the Husson Eagles to a 3-0 start in North Atlantic Conference play with an 83-68 win over the University of Maine-Presque Isle Owls in men’s basketball action at Newman Gymnasium in Bangor.

Neither team led by more than three points for the first seven minutes of the opening half. Shyquinn Dix put the Owls up 17-12 with a layup with 13:01 to go. Brett Cunningham would put the hosts up for good at 25-23 with 3:43 left. The Eagles used a 6-2 run over the last 1:23 for their biggest lead to that point taking a 38-31 lead into halftime.

Husson slowly pulled away in the second half. Dix made 1-2 from the line to cut the Eagles lead to 49-46 with 12:57 left, but that is as close as the Owls would get. DJ Bussey gave the Eagles a second half boost off the bench with 11 points as Husson improved their overall record to 5-7 to go along with that perfect start in conference. 15 points was the largest lead of the night.

Lewis added nine rebounds to his team high in points for Husson in the win. Justin Thompson had 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Bussey had 11 points. Justice Kendall also contributed 10 points. Dix led UMPI (4-7, 0-3) with a game high 21 points, six rebounds, two assists, and four steals. Griffin Guerrette had 17 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. TeVon Hines and DeAndre Duncombe also chipped in 11 points each. The Eagles outscored the Owls in bench points 45-6. The teams will square off again at Newman Gym Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
