BANGOR- The Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners went on a 9-0 run to end the first half and a 10-2 run early in the second half as they cruised to a 48-34 win over Katahdin in a Class D girls basketball semifinal game played at the Cross Insurance Center on Thursday afternoon.
The game had nine lead changes until the Mariners went on the run at the end of the half. Katahdin had a lead of 9-8 at the end of first quarter and 16-15 late in the first half. The Mariners had five different scorers in the third quarter and six players that scored in the final eight minutes.
Danielle Libby led the way for the Cougars with 16 points and eight rebounds. Lily Cullen filled up the stat sheet with five points, six rebounds, and six steals for Katahdin who finishes the season with a 14-6 record.
Kaylee Morey led the way for the Mariners with 13 points, three rebounds, and two steals. Brittany Gray had 10 points and five rebounds. Bri Limeburner and Katie Hutchinson had seven and six points respectively. Rylee Eaton only put in two points but did everything else. She recorded 12 rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Deer Isle-Stonington (18-2) will play in the regional final on Saturday morning at 9:05 AM.
Deer Isle-Stonington outrebounded Katahdin 37-22. The Mariners shot 13-18 from the free throw line, while the Cougars shot 8-17.
