Bangor,ME- The University of Maine Farmington Women’s Basketball team upset Maine Maritime Academy 70-63 Friday night at the Newman Gymnasium in a #3 VS #2 North Atlantic Conference Semifinal.
Farmington was quick to the scoring to open the game, quickly racing out to a 10-2 lead within the first couple minutes of the opening quarter. MMA would claw their way back to close the lead to 15-11 at the end of the first quarter.
The Mariners would keep up the pressure and would take the lead 92 seconds into the second quarter with a layup from Melinda Ogden. Th Beavers would go on a second quarter scoring drought which lasted nearly three minutes in game time and would only score eight points in the quarter, despite that, the Mariners couldn’t capitalize on many opportunities and would hold on to a 30-25 lead at halftime.
MMA would maintain a five to six point gap throughout most of the third quarter. The Beavers climbed their way towards the lead late in the quarter and would regain the lead on an Alex Bessey Three point shot with 1:43 to play in the third and would enter the final quarter of play with a 45-43 lead.
The fourth quarter would see many lead changes between the two squads. McKenna Brodeur would give the Beavers the lead for good with a layup with just over six minutes to play. Tia Day would hit back to back threes to give UMF an eight point lead which would be comfortable enough as the beavers would make free throws in the final 90 seconds to hold onto the win.
Alex Bessey recorded 22 points in the win, 17 of those points from the free throw line going 17-20. Tia Day scored 21 points and McKenna Brodeur recorded a double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The Mariners were led by Lauren Plissey with 12 points and 12 rebounds and Mikayla Charters with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the effort.
UMF improves to 14-13 overall on the season and will play the #1 seeded Husson Eagles in the North Atlantic Conference Championship game tomorrow afternoon at 2PM at Husson.
MMA finishes the season 20-5 and 12-2 in the NAC.
