Wells gets by Hermon in overtime to win first girls basketball gold ball

BANGOR– Franny Ramsdell scored five points in overtime to lead Wells to a 34-26 win over Hermon in the Class B girls basketball state championship game at the Cross Insurance Center on Saturday night.

Grace Ramsdell scored eight points in the first quarter as the Warriors jumped out to a 13-8 lead. The Hawks turned up the defense and only allowed 13 points the next 24 minutes.

Wells held a 21-19 advantage at halftime behind 12 points from Grace Ramsdell. Paige Plissey has eight points in the first half for the Hawks. The third quarter featured four points and one field goal between the two teams.

Maddy Lebel made a three pointer early in the final quarter to get Hermon within one (24-23). Meg Tracy gave the Hawks a 26-24 lead with 5:20 remaining. With three minutes left, Mallory Aromando evened up the score with the basket that would eventually send the game into overtime.

Aromando would hit 1-2 from the free throw line with 3:10 left in overtime. That would be all the Warriors would need, but they would score seven more anyways.

Plissey led the Hawks with 10 points and five steals. Lebel added five points, three rebounds, and three steals. Hermon finishes the season with a 20-2 record.

Grace Ramsdell led the Warriors with 14 points, 15 rebounds, and four steals. Franny Ramsdell added nine points, nine rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Aromando added seven points, three rebounds, and three blocks. It is the first state title for the Wells (16-6) girls basketball program.
