The University of Maine men’s and women’s hockey teams were swept in a pair of Hockey East games on Sunday and Monday.

On Sunday night at #17 UMass-Lowell, the men’s team rallied from a two goal deficit to tie the game 2-2 after two periods, but the Riverhawks got three goals in the first 5:03 of the third period to secure a 5-3 Hockey East win. On Monday afternoon a wild back and forth game early saw the game tied 3-3 after one period, before UML (3-1-0) scored three more in the second and three in the third pulling away for a 9-5 win for the two game sweep.

Brad Morrissey, Emil Westerlund, and Ben Poisson had the goals Sunday for Maine (0-3-1), while Jacob Schmidt-Svestrup had a pair of assists. Matthew Thiessen made 18 saves in net. On Monday, the Black Bears got two goals and an assist from Eduards Tralmaks, and also goals from Westerlund, Edward Lindelow, and Levi Kleiboer. Jakob Sirota and Adam Dawe had two assists a piece. The visitors were outshot Monday 58-30 (46-13 after the first period). The host Riverhawks got a hat trick from Chase Blackmun and six other skaters had one a piece. Freshman Victor Ostman made his collegiate debut in net for Maine, and allowed four goals on 17 shots before being lifted for Thiessen who took the loss allowing five goals on 41 shots. The Bears are at Vermont Friday and Saturday at 2 p.m.

At Matthews Arena in Boston, the #3 ranked Northeastern Huskies dominated shots on goal and shut out the Maine Black Bears 3-0 Sunday evening and 1-0 Monday evening.

On Sunday, Maine (4-4-0, 3-3-0 Hockey East) was outshot 47-16, as the hosts from Northeastern got two third period goals to put away the win. Loryn Porter made 44 saves but the offense couldn’t pick her up, as NU got goals from Brooke Hobson, Skylar Fontaine, and Ani Fitzgerald. It more of the same on Monday as the Huskies got an early third period goal at 2:04 by Chloe Aurard, and that is all they needed as they outshot the Black Bears 41-21 to sweep the series. Porter was big again with 40 saves, but unfortunately the guests couldn’t find the scoreboard. Northeastern improves to 3-1-0. Maine is scheduled to play two games with Vermont this upcoming weekend.
