Big second period helps Maine men’s hockey break losing streak

The Maine Black Bears scored three second period goals on Friday evening, including a game winner by JD Greenway to pick up a 6-4 win over the Connecticut Huskies in men’s Hockey East action at Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Connecticut.

A back and forth first period saw UConn (8-10-2, 8-10-2 Hockey East) take a 1-0 lead when Marc Gatcomb scored at 7:03. AJ Drobot had the answer for Maine scoring his first of the season at 11:53. Hudson Schandor gave the Huskies their final lead of the night when he converted on a penalty shot shorthanded at 18:27. It took the Black Bears 16 seconds to equalize when Ben Poisson made it 2-2 on the powerplay at 18:43. Brady Gaudette put Maine (3-9-1, 3-9-1 HE) up for good at 2:22 of the second period. Jack Quinlivan also got a chance on a penalty shot 25 seconds later, and would convert to make it 4-2. Greenway got that eventual game winner at 7:52. UConn dominated the shots on goal, and would cut it to a two goal game again when Jonny Evans scored at 8:48 of the third. Drobot got his second of the evening into an empty net at 17:34. The Huskies got another one late by Gatcomb at 19:04, but they had run out of time.

Freshman Victor Ostman got the win in goal with 40 saves. He did leave with an apparent leg injury with 6:28 left in the third period. Matthew Thiessen allowed one goal on nine shots in relief. The Huskies outshot Maine 52-19 in the game. Drobot (two goals), Adrien Bisson (two assists), and Dawson Bruneski (two assists) were the multiple point scorers for the Black Bears, who end a five game losing streak. Tomas Vomacka made 13 saves in the loss for UConn. Gatcomb had the two goals and also added an assist. The teams finish off their two game series on Saturday at 4 p.m.
