DEXTER– The Dexter Tigers used a 20-4 run to defeat Central 63-48 in the boys basketball Penquis League championship game played Friday afternoon at Ed Guiski gymnasium.
After Dexter scored the first basket, Central responded with five straight points, including a three pointer from Simon Allen to give the Red Devils a 5-2 lead. Central would hold their last lead at 11-9 midway through the first quarter. Dexter went on a 6-0 run and finished the quarter with a slim 15-14 advantage. Robbie Dorman (Dexter) and Allen (Central) each point in 10 points in the first eight minutes of play.
Dexter held a 24-22 lead midway through the second quarter. The Tigers took over from that point, going on a 9-0 spurt to take a 33-22 lead. Central (7-8) scored the last four points of the half to cut the deficit to 33-26 heading into halftime.
The second half started with Dexter scoring the first eight points, as Brett Kusnierz sparked the run with seven of those eight. The Tigers capped the 20-4 run that started in the second quarter for their biggest lead (20) in the game at 44-24.
Allen scored a game high 30 points for the Red Devils. Allen shot 9-10 from the free throw line and also pulled down eight rebounds. Bryce Burns had eight points and two steals. Nick Schilpstein had four points and eight rebounds. Lucas Gustin added four points, five rebounds, and three steals, while Will Libby chipped in with two points.
The senior duo of Dorman and Brett Kusnierz powered the Tigers attack. Kusnierz had 19 points, eight rebounds, and two assists. Dorman had 18 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks, and three assists. Will Kusnierz had eight points, two assists, and two blocks. Parker Ponte and Avery Gagnon added six points each. Bryce Connor came off the bench to record four points and four rebounds, and Jacob Campbell had two points and five rebounds.
Dexter (12-2) out rebounded Central 37-24. The Tigers will travel to Schenck for a cross over clash on Tuesday afternoon. The Wolverines defeated PVHS 53-50 to win the Penobscot League championship.
