Husson basketball sweeps UMaine-Farmington

The Husson Eagles basketball teams both took on the University of Maine-Farmington on Saturday. The men’s team played on the road in Farmington, while the women were hosting the Beavers at Newman Gymnasium in Bangor.

At Dearborn Gymnasium in Farmington, the Eagles men’s team stayed unbeaten at 6-0 getting 20 points from DJ Bussey for an 86-69 win over the Beavers.

UMF (2-1) got off to an 11-4 lead early in the first half. Justin Thompson had a layup as part of a 10-0 Husson run that gave them the lead for good. The Eagles led by as many as 12 in the opening 20 minutes and 38-29 at the half. The Beavers got within a point on a three-pointer early in the second half, but the visitors would pull away with a 10-2 spurt later to go up by 14. The Eagles largest lead of the contest was 18. Bussey added six rebounds to go along with his game high point total. Justice Kendall added 16 points, while Issac Varney and Cam Wood put in eight points a piece. Kyle Donlin led UMF with 19 points and six rebounds.

At Newman Gym in Bangor, Husson put four players in double figures and built a 17 point halftime lead pulling away from the Beavers 77-51 in women’s action.

The Eagles (4-0) never trailed starting with a 10-2 run. They would open the second quarter on a run of 12-2 to open up the lead to 25-9, and 36-19 at the half. They outscored UMF (0-2) 41-32 in the second half to cruise to the win, leading by as many as 32 late in the fourth quarter. Bailey Donovan led the way with a game high 16 points, 15 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Sydney Allen had 15 points, while Vanessa Duarte had 14 and Trinity Montigny had 12. Rosalie White had 10 points off the bench for the Beavers, while Alex Bessey added nine points.

Both Husson teams return to action next Saturday 3/13 against Maine Maritime Academy.
