March 20, 2021

The Husson University baseball and softball teams both began their 2021 season on Saturday afternoon at home. Baseball was hosting #11 University of Southern Maine, while softball entertained Saint Joseph’s College in a pair of non-conference games for both squads.

At the Winkin Complex, the nationally ranked USM Huskies baseball team came away with a sweep over Husson by scores of 16-6 and 5-2.

In game one, USM scored six runs in the third and five more in the fourth to take a huge lead of 15-0 to put the game away early. Jonathan Wilson had two hits and five RBI for the Huskies, including a three run homer. Cam Seymour added a solo homer and three RBI, while Andrew Olszak also knocked in three. David Leblanc and Chris Ewanik both had two RBI in the loss for Husson. Cam Graham took the loss on the mound for the Eagles allowing seven runs (two earned) on three hits, with five walks and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings. In game two, USM scored three sixth inning runs to pull away for the win. Four different Huskies had an RBI each, as the visitors took advantage of three Husson errors. Leblanc and Ewanik each had another RBI each in the loss. Brandon Brunell was the tough luck loser on the hill allowing just one run on one hit with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

At Boucher Field, Husson softball cruised to a pair of wins over the visiting Monks from Saint Joseph’s College 9-1 and 8-1.

In game one, St Joseph’s scored an early run in the top of the first before Husson scored seven in the bottom half and won by mercy in the shortened five inning game. Sydney Ames had three hits for the Eagles, while Kenzie Dore, Maddy Fowler, and Erin Bonenfant had two RBI a piece. Jen Jones got the pitching win allowing one run on four hits with 11 strikeouts in 5.0 innings. In game two, six different Eagles had an RBI and both Katie Raymond and Ames had two hits to complete the sweep. Ames also picked up the win in the circle allowing one run on six hits with five strikeouts in the complete 7.0 inning effort.

The same teams play another doubleheader at the Winkin Complex and at Boucher Field on Sunday at 12 p.m.
