March 20, 2021

Daryl Watts scored 3:16 into overtime Saturday night, as the Wisconsin Badgers took home the NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey national championship with a 2-1 win over the Northeastern Huskies at Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, Pennsylvania.

After a scoreless two periods, #2 Wisconsin struck first when MaKenna Webster scored at the 11 minute mark of the third period. Chloe Aurard scored the equalizer though just 39 seconds later for top ranked Northeastern. The overtime winner by Watts came when she was behind the Huskies net, and centered one out front that went off the back of a Northeastern defender and into the net sending the Badgers to their sixth title. The loss was the first in 19 games for NU (22-2-1), who was seeking the first ever title in any sport at the school and the first women’s title for Hockey East. Wisconsin ends up at 17-3-1 and have won back to back titles (2019 and now 2021), as the 2020 game wasn’t played due to the coronavirus pandemic.
