The Husson baseball and softball teams finished off their season opening weekend series on Sunday afternoon, with the baseball team trying to win their first game at the Winkin Complex and the softball team trying to keep their momentum going after a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Boucher Field.
At the Wink, the 11th ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies completed the weekend sweep over Husson baseball with 13-1 and 5-2 wins.
In game one, USM took an early 7-0 lead in the third inning and cruised to the win. Former Bangor Ram Andrew Hillier had three hits, while Sam Troiano, Jonathan Wilson, and Dylan Hapworth all hit homeruns to pace the Huskies offense. Kobe Rogerson had an RBI single for Husson as they were held to three hits. Former Washington Academy standout Gage Feeney pitched USM to the win allowing just one run on two hits with seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Hunter O’Connor took the loss for the Eagles allowing seven runs on five hits in 2.1 innings. In game two, Husson came back from an early 2-0 deficit to tie the game, but USM scored three in the fifth inning to make it four straight wins. Ethan Stoddard and Austin Baron had the RBI hits for the Eagles, while Cam Seymour won it for the Huskies with an RBI double in the three run fifth. Jesse Colford suffered the pitching loss in relief allowing three runs on three hits in 2.2 innings.
Over at Boucher Field, the Husson softball team would complete the weekend sweep over Saint Joseph’s College with 5-4 and 8-4 wins.
In game one, Sydney Ames, Katie Windsor, and Jen Jones had two hits each and Kenzie Dore had two RBI as the Eagles held off the Monks. Saint Joseph’s, playing as the home team, had the tying and winning runs on second and third with noone out in the bottom of the seventh but Ames came in for relief to shut the door. Jones (2-0) got the win in the circle allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits with nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings, with Ames picking up the save. In game two, Husson scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh to start the season at 4-0. Maddy Fowler led the offense with two hits and three RBI. Ames (2-0) got the pitching win allowing four runs on four hits in a complete game 7.0 inning effort.
Next up for the Eagles, the softball team is scheduled to host UMaine-Presque Isle for a doubleheader on Thursday while baseball is scheduled to play two at Saint Joseph’s College on Sunday.
