Bruins rally to take an extra point over the Devils

March 30, 2021

The Boston Bruins rallied from a pair of two goal deficits on Tuesday night, and then got shootout goals from Charlie Coyle and David Pastrnak to secure the extra point 5-4 over the New Jersey Devils at TD Garden.

Miles Wood for New Jersey and Nick Ritchie for Boston swapped first period goals, before Michael McLeod scored at 9:34 of the first and Travis Zajac did the same at 3:45 of the second to make it 3-1 Devils. Brad Marchand got his 13th of the season on the powerplay at 15:48 of the middle period to cut it to a goal, before Kyle Palmieri restored the two goal advantage 4-2 just 1:18 later. Charlie McAvoy once again cut the deficit to one at 10:22 of the third, and Matt Grzeclyk would send the game to overtime with his third goal of the year at 16:00. The Bruins had some good chances early in overtime, but Devils goalie Mackenzie Blackwood shut the door. New Jersey had a powerplay in the extra session as well, but couldn’t come through. Pavel Zucha and Palmieri were both stopped by Boston goaltender Jaroslav Halak in the shootout, while Coyle and Pastrnak both converted to give the hosts the extra point.

Halak made 31 saves for Boston, as their record goes to 18-9-5. Craig Smith and David Krejci both had three assists, while Marchand had a goal and an assist. The Bruins are still officially winless against the Devils this season (0-4-2), with just two shootout victories. Blackwood made 44 saves to help New Jersey pick up a point, as they go to 13-16-5. Boston will host Pittsburgh Thursday night.
