Maine Field Hockey finishes regular season with shootout win

The University of Maine Field Hockey team finished off their regular season on Sunday morning with a 3-2 shootout win over the University of California-Davis at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono. The win gives the Black Bears a share of the regular season conference title, as they will enter the playoffs as the #2 seed.

UC-Davis (1-10, 0-8 America East) had a pair of one goal leads in the game. After a scoreless first half, Gavin Shea tipped a shot into the cage past Maine goalie Mia Borley 40 seconds into the third quarter to make it 1-0 Aggies. Chloe Walton tied it for the Black Bears with 30 seconds left in the third on an assist from Poppy Lambert. Emily Chen scored her third of the season 6:27 into the fourth quarter to give the visitors the lead back 2-1. Maine would force overtime when Brittany Smith buried a rebound with 4:31 left to play. After two scorless overtime periods, the teams went to a shootout with the Black Bears Julia Ross scoring the only marker to lift the hosts to the win.

Borley made seven saves in net for Maine, as the Bears finish their regular season at 7-3 and 7-1 in America East play. Maine had the advantage on attempted shots 22-21 and shots on goal (13-9). Kalli Wagnon made 11 saves in the loss for UC-Davis. Maine will face Stanford in the semifinal round of the America East Tournament on Thursday, with a time to be announced. The playoffs are being hosted by Monmouth University, as they finished as the #1 seed with their regular season win over the Black Bears.
