Xander Bogaerts had a game winning two-run single in the 10th inning Sunday night, as the Boston Red Sox completed their 21st comeback win of the season and a three game sweep at Yankee Stadium for the first time since June 2011 with a 6-5 victory over the New York Yankees.
Alex Verdugo got Boston off to a 1-0 lead with his eighth homerun of the year, a one out solo shot in the top of the first. Gary Sanchez gave New York the lead in the bottom half though with a two-run double to make it 2-1. Aaron Judge had an RBI groundout in the fourth inning to extend the advantage to 3-1 Yankees. Marwin Gonzalez came through huge in the seventh for the Red Sox to tie the score. After Hunter Renfroe walked to lead off, Gonzalez hit his second long ball of the season to left field and it was 3-3. The guests took the lead back again in the eighth inning when Christian Arroyo doubled, and would score on a Bogaerts sacrifice fly. Matt Barnes tried to close it in the bottom of the ninth, but Judge walked with one out and would score on a Gleyber Torres double to even it again 4-4. The Yanks had the game winning run at third base with two outs, but Barnes struck out Rougned Odor on what appeared to be a ball outside to send it to extras. In the 10th, with Christian Vazquez on second base with the extra inning rule, Bobby Dalbec worked a walk. Arroyo then laid down a sacrifice bunt to get runners to second and third with one out. After Verdugo grounded out, Bogaerts lined the game winning single to left centerfield on a 2-1 pitch to score Vazquez and Dalbec. New York got one back in the bottom half when Tyler Wade had an infield single that scored Odor, and advanced to second when Gonzalez made a throwing error on the play. Sox reliever Phillips Valdez ended the game and completed the weekend sweep when he got DJ LeMahieu to groundout.
Bogaerts had two hits and three RBI for Boston (36-23), who has now won four in a row after losing the first three games of the road trip in Houston. Garrett Richards got a no decision on the mound allowing three runs on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Josh Taylor got his sixth hold of the season. Barnes (2-1) got credit for the win but also his second blown save, while Valdez picked up his first save. Sanchez, Judge, Torres, and Gio Urshela each had two hits for New York (31-29). Domingo German allowed one run on three hits in 5.2 innings. Lucas Luetge suffered his first blown save, and Luis Cessa (1-1) took the loss by allowing the two runs in the 10th. The Red Sox return to Fenway Park to open up an eight game homestand, first with a single 5:10 p.m. makeup game with the Miami Marlins on Monday. Boston sends RHP Nick Pivetta (6-1, 3.77 ERA) to the hill, to be opposed by RHP Pablo Lopez (1-3, 2.82) for Miami.
