DEXTER— Avery Herrick did it with her arm and her bat to lead the Dexter Tigers softball team to a 5-1 win over Bucksport in a Class C semifinal game played Saturday morning at Dexter High School.

The Bucks started fast when Alexis Wardwell hit a single and came around to score when Kaylee Morey drilled a deep double. The Tigers turned a nifty double play when third baseman Hannah Dean threw it to first for one out and received a throw from first baseman Elizabeth Kinney and put the tag down on the runner.

On the other side, Bucksport pitcher Madison Frazier didn’t allow a hit through four innings. The bottom of the fifth inning started with Dean getting hitting by a pinch, Jade Wintle followed with a bunt single. Dean and Wintle both scored when Kinney reached on an error.

Herrick was taking care of things in the circle for the Tigers. She only allowed three hits after the first inning. Herrick allowed one run on five hits, she didn’t issue any walks and struck out six.

Bucksport had a great chance in the sixth inning when Ella Hosford reached on an error, and Wardwell followed with a single. Morey bunted to moved the runners to scoring position. Herrick retired Alyssa Maguire on a pop up back to the pitcher and Alyssa Pickering flied out to Mikayla Bignell in left field as the rally was halted.

Dexter put the game away in the sixth inning when Peyton Grant started things with a double over the center fielders head. Herrick followed with a blast over the left field fence. Jasmine Lewis reached on a single, and Cheyenne Beem hit into a fielders choice. Beem came all the way around to score from first when Dean smacked a double.

Herrick retired the side in order in the top of the seventh inning on just four pitches. Dexter (14-2) will take a 13 game winning streak into the Northern Maine regional final on Tuesday night at 6:30 PM at Coffin Field in Brewer.
