Bucksport boys Soccer preview
Coach: John Boynton
Assistants: George Watkins and Jakob Donnell
2019 Season Record: 5 – 9
2020 Season Record 0 – 8
Expectations: “ The Bucksport High School Boys Varsity Soccer team has high expectations for the 2021 season,”Boynton said. “After losing only two starters from the 2021 squad we bring back an experienced group of young men. We field a team that has twelve seniors so we will rely on their experience together often this season. Our main goal is to be back to the postseason for the first time since 2017.”
Weaknesses: “Our biggest weakness is our lack of that star scorer. In clutch moments it can come in really handy to have that player that is single handedly capable of taking over a soccer game.” Boynton said
Strengths: “Depth, Team Play, and Goalkeeping. While we may lack that stand out star scorer, we bring a wave of players capable of scoring when called upon,”Boynton said. “We also return three starters on the defensive line as well as our all conference goalkeeper, Colin Simpson. With so much experience playing together, this might be the best passing team Bucksport has ever fielded.”
2020 Season Recap: “We hoped to make a big splash in Northern Maine Class C in 2020 but Covid quickly put an end to those hopes. Pod play found us playing the likes of Class B powers Ellsworth and MDI and perennial Northern Maine contender GSA,”Boynton said. “While we didn’t win a game in 2020 we gained a mountain of experience playing right with really good teams. 1-0 adrenaline filled losses to both Ellsworth and MDI as well as a 3-2 thriller of a loss against GSA really hardened our players, getting them ready for a postseason run in 2021.”
Bucksport starts the season with road games at Mattanawcook and PCHS before playing their home opener against Searsport on September 9th.
