The Husson University men’s and women’s soccer teams opened up their 2021 season on Wednesday. The men would end in a double overtime tie with the University of Southern Maine, while the women rolled against Fisher College.

At Boucher Field in Bangor, the Husson men’s soccer team got a first half goal from Pablo Maroto Yepes but couldn’t hold on as the University of Southern Maine got a second half goal and the contest ended in a 1-1 draw in a defensive battle.

Yepes scored unassisted in the 27th minute for the Eagles, but the Huskies answered on a marker from Tyler St. Martin in the second half at the 68th minute. Neither team could muster anything in the two 10 minute overtime periods. Each team only had two shots on goal each, as Benjamin Powell for Husson and Jacob Satires for USM each made one save. Husson will host Plymouth State on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Earlier in the day at Winchester Community College in Winchester, Massachusetts, the Husson women’s soccer team blitzed Fisher College 15-3.

The Eagles set the school mark for goals scored in a game, with the previous record being 13. Charlotte Messer and Natalie Aviolla both had three goals to lead the way, while Willow Whitten had two. Husson put 36 shots on goal and had eight team assists in the season opening victory. Shie Smith played the first half in net and got credited with the win making one save on one shot. Husson plays their home opener on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the University of Southern Maine.
