Jorge Soler hit a game winning three-run homerun in the third inning, and Max Fried pitched 6.0 innings of shutout baseball on Tuesday night in leading the Atlanta Braves past the Houston Astros 7-0 in Game 6 of the World Series at Minute Maid Park. Atlanta wins the series 4-2, capturing their second world title and first since 1995.
Ozzie Albies led off the top of the third with a single, and then after Travis d’Arnaud and Dansby Swanson were retired, Eddie Rosario drew a two out walk off Houston starter Luis Garcia. Soler then delivered with a long homerun on a 3-2 pitch that totally left the park and traveled an estimated 446 feet to left field that ended the night for Garcia. Soler tied an Atlanta record with his third homerun of the World Series, joining Ryan Klesko, Terry Pendleton, and Hank Aaron as the only other Braves hitters with three long balls in the fall classic. They would add on in the fifth inning when Swanson hit a one out, two-run homer and Freddie Freeman added an RBI double to make it 6-0. Freeman later added a solo homerun in the seventh. Fried (1-1) only allowed four hits and had six strikeouts in the decisive outing.
Albies and Freeman both had two hits, and Soler who was picked up by Atlanta from Kansas City at the trade deadline was named the World Series MVP. Michael Brantley had two hits for Houston, with Garcia (0-2) taking the loss allowing three runs in 2.2 innings. The Astros finish their season with a final record of 104-73. The Braves, who had the worst record of all the playoff teams entering the postseason, finished at 99-78.
