Husson men’s and women’s basketball score wins Friday night

The Husson University men’s and women’s basketball teams both continued their early season non-conference schedules on Friday night. The men had their home opener in Bangor against UMaine-Fort Kent, while the women were on the road at the Brandeis University Tip-Off Tournament against Connecticut College.

In Bangor at Newman Gymnasium, the Eagles men’s team made a run just over halfway through the first half to break open a close game and would pull away for a 97-63 win over the visiting UMFK Bengals.

Husson (2-1) led 47-31 at the halftime break, and then opened the second half on a 28-16 run to extend the advantage to 75-47 with 9:53 left. The lead would balloon to as many as 41 on a pair of free throws with 5:41 to go, as the Eagles won their home opener. DJ Bussey led the way in the win with 20 points. J Thomas had 19 off the bench, Justice Kendall had 14 points and nine assists, while both Justin Thompson and Jeremy Moronta added 10 points a piece. Thompson had seven rebounds, and Moronta also had seven rebounds and five assists. Jordan Guerrero came off the bench to lead UMFK (2-3) with 16 points. Husson will host Saint Joseph’s (Maine) next Saturday at 1 p.m.

At Red Auerbach Arena in Waltham, Massachusetts, the Eagles women’s team outscored Connecticut College 24-12 in the third quarter to pick up a spot in the Tip-Off Tournament championship game with a 64-47 victory.

Husson (2-0) had one lead in the first half and it was the games first basket by Bailey Donovan. The Camels from Connecticut College would lead by as many as eight, and held a 26-23 halftime advantage. The Eagles started the third quarter on a 22-7 run to turn a three point deficit into a 12 point lead and never trailed again. The 17 point margin of victory was the largest lead of the night. Bailey Donovan led all scorers with 25 points, 16 rebounds, and two blocks in the win. Kaycie Rojik led Connecticut College (0-1) with 16 points. Husson plays the hosts from Brandeis University (2-0) in the title game on Saturday at 2 p.m.
