Penquis Boys Basketball 2021/2022 preview

Coach: Jason Mills

Team record from last season: 7-7 overall, lost to Central in Pod semi-final game and beat PCHS in the 3rd place game

Key returning players: Alvin Robshaw, Mikal Sickler, LJ Shaw, Nate Lovejoy, Max Wells, Dylan McKenzie, Andrew Lagasse, and Billy Sanborn

Key newcomers: the Patriots have five newcomers to the roster.

Expectations : “We are very excited for the upcoming basketball season,”Mills said. “We return a solid nucleus and it is our goal to be playing at the Cross Center in February.  We are looking to build off our solid season we had in our Pod last winter.”

Robshaw and Sickler will be looked to as leaders on and off the court for the Patriots.

“We will be led by seniors Alvin Robshaw and Mikal Sickler.  Both were starters last year and will be counted on to carry the load this year.  Juniors LJ Shaw and Nate Lovejoy will be counted on to step into starting roles this year after coming off the bench last year.  Sophomores Max Wells and Dylan McKenzie will be counted on as well,”Mills said. “We have a very quick team thar will look to get up and down the floor offensively and aply a lot of pressure with our defense.”

The Patriots will be looking to create offense from their pressure defense. Penquis has a solid group that has a chance to contend in class C and make an appearance at the Cross Insurance Center in February.

“Keys for us will be to develop more depth as we will have to play an up tempo style offensively with pressure defense to make up for our lack of size,”Mills said.  “Like everyone else we are hoping for good health so we can get our games in this winter season. We are excited to have fans back in the gym with the chance to play at the Cross Center in February.”

The Patriots open the season with a home game against Searsport on December 13th. They follow that up with a game against Dexter in Milo. They finish the 2021 calendar year with three road games. Eastern Maine Sports Media is scheduled to have live coverage of the Patriots games on January 22nd when they host Central, and on February 5th when they host Stearns.

Teams in class C this year to look out for:

Ft. Kent – might be the favorite to win it, solid group, led by Austin Delisle

Dexter – is always solid with Peter Murray as coach and one of the better players around in Wil Kusnierz

Stearns – will be a solid team and is led by Elliot Shearer

Lee – will be very good coming off a State Championship in soccer and will be led by Eain Allard, Andrew Scott, and Nick Allard

GSA – is always a solid club that is in the mix come tourney time

Central – has one of the better back courts around with Bryce Burns and Simon Allen
