McDaniels to leave New England to become Las Vegas Head Coach

January 30, 2022

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is getting another Head Coaching opportunity. Per Ian Rapoport on Sunday afternoon, McDaniels has been named the new Head Coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

McDaniels has spent 17 non-consecutive seasons since 2001 as a coach on the staff under Bill Belichik. He left in 2009 and 2010 to take a head coaching job with the Denver Broncos. He has served as a personnel assistant, defensive assistant, quarterbacks coach, and mostly as offensive coordinator with New England. His overall head coaching record (two seasons with Denver) is 11-17. He was fired by the Broncos after a 3-9 start to the 2010 season. He also verbally committed to become the Head Coach for the Indianapolis Colts on February 6, 2018 but on the same day withdrew that decision and stayed with the Patriots.

McDaniels will join Patriots Director of Player Personnel Dave Ziegler in Las Vegas, as he has been hired to be the Raiders new General Manager after three year GM Mike Mayock was fired days after a Wild Card Playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Las Vegas finished their season at 10-8 and went 7-6 under interim coach Rich Bisaccia, who was promoted from coaching special teams after Jon Gruden resigned back on October 11.
