Mollie Gray sparks MDI girls to quarterfinal win

February 18, 2022

BANGOR- Sophomore forward Mollie Gray had a game high 19 points on Friday afternoon, leading the Mount Desert Island Trojans to a 46-28 Class B North girls quarterfinal win over the Ellsworth Eagles at the Cross Insurance Center.

In the first high school basketball tournament game in Bangor in nearly two years, the third seed from MDI got off to a quick start. Helped by four points from Olivia Gray, the Trojans scored the first eight points of the game and didn’t allow Ellsworth to get on the scoreboard until four minutes into action. It was 12-4 after one quarter. The sixth seeded Eagles cut into that in the second, and a 1-2 effort from the line by Jocelyn Jordan sliced it to 16-13. That is as close as they’d get however. Ellsworth only managed 10 points in the second half, and Mollie Gray scored 10 of her 19 points in the final 16 minutes as MDI punched their ticket to the semifinals next Wednesday against Hermon at 2:05.

M. Gray added eight rebounds to her game high point total in the win for 16-4 MDI. O. Gray added seven points, and Elena Alderman chipped in six. Morgan Clifford led Ellsworth in the loss with nine points, Abby Radel had seven, and Grace Jaffray contributed six points and seven rebounds. The Eagles finish their season at 12-8.
