BANGOR- The Schenck Wolverines overcame a 13 point first half deficit to defeat Van Buren 42-41 in a Class D boys basketball quarterfinal game played Monday morning at the Cross Insurance Center.
Van Buren held a 6-5 lead after the first quarter. The Crusaders scored the first eight points of the second quarter to take a 14-5 advantage. After a Wolverines basket, Van Buren scored the next six points to take their biggest lead of the game (13). The Crusaders held a 22-11 halftime lead behind a 29-15 rebounding edge.
Schenck picked up the pressure and went on two separate 6-0 runs in the third quarter as they cut the deficit to 26-25. They evened the score at 27 late in the third quarter. Van Buren scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 31-27 lead.
Schenck went on another 6-0 run early in the fourth quarter and evened the score on a Gabe Whitehouse basket. Van Buren responded with scoring the next six points. The Wolverines responded with an 8-1 run and took a lead (41-40) when Ryan Ingalls got a basket with 1:20 remaining. Blake Martin made 1-2 from the free throw line to even the score at 41. Ingalls made a free throw with 6.3 seconds remaining to give the Schenck the lead. Van Buren wouldn’t get a shot off before the buzzer as the sixth seed Wolverines took down the #3 Crusaders.
Martin and Henry Hebert each recorded a double double for the Crusaders. Martin scored a game high 16 points and had 20 rebounds. Hebert had 15 points and 15 rebounds. Van Buren out-rebounded Schenck 40-27. The Crusaders finish the season with a record of 11-7.
Kaden Hannan scored a team high 13 points and had three steals for the Wolverines. Ingalls had nine points, nine rebounds, and two steals. Mason McDunnah recorded eight points, six rebounds, and three steals. Schenck (10-10) will play a semifinal game on Thursday night.
