Stearns wins first girls basketball regional championship since 1995

BANGOR- When the going gets tough, the big time players come through. That is exactly what happened in the fourth quarter of a Stearns 32-30 win over PVHS in the Class C girls basketball regional championship played Monday night at the Cross Insurance Center.

Alisyn Alley had 14 points and nine steals, but the biggest play came when Alley made a beautiful pass to Kasey Kenyon who put it in to give the Minutemen a 31-28 lead with 1:30 remaining. Alley added four steals and four assists to go with her game high point total and nine steals.

The Howlers held a 15-14 lead after the first half, going 7-11 from the free throw line. Makayla Anderson made 2 three-pointers in the third quarter as Stearns held a 25-21 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Howlers evened up the score on a Holly Loring basket with 6:16 remaining. Alley made two straight baskets to give Stearns a lead they wouldn’t give back.

It is the first Class C regional championship for Stearns (16-3). They won the regional title in Class B in 1995, and won three in Class A before that. Anderson had 11 points (3 three pointers) for the Minutemen. Kenyon had eight rebounds and four points. Stearns will face Hall-Dale (22-0) in the state championship game Saturday night at the Augusta Civic Center.
