Breen helps Oceanside win first girls basketball gold ball

BANGOR— Bailey Breen recorded 12 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocks to lead Oceanside to a 31-28 win over Hermon in the Class B girls basketball state championship game played Friday night at the Cross Insurance Center.

After Abby Waterman made two free throws to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead, Hermon held a lead the rest of the first half. The Hawks went on a 10-0 run that started in the first quarter and wasn’t halted until Audrey Mackie made a three pointer for Oceanside with 4:20 left in the second quarter. Maddie Lebel (7) and Elizabeth Wyman (6) combined for 13 points in the first half as the Hawks held a 17-10 lead at intermission.

The Waterman three-pointer in the first half started what would end up being a 15-0 run for the Mariners. They held Hermon scoreless for nine minutes of play. The run was stopped when Lebel made a three- pointer with two minutes left in the third quarter to even the score at 20. Faith Coombs followed with a three pointer that would give the Hawks a 23-20 advantage. Breen would complete a three point play with a field goal and free throw to even the score. Lebel made 1-2 from the free throw line to give the Hawks a 24-23 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

Ahliva Morris made her only basket of the game early in the fourth quarter to give the Mariners a 25-24 lead. Oceanside would hold Hermon to only four points in the final quarter. Breen and Emily Sykes combined to go 4-4 from the free throw line down the stretch to secure the Mariners (20-0) first girls basketball state championship. Mackie had eight points (2 three-pointers), Sykes had five points, and Waterman recorded four points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Lebel scored a game high 13 points, and also had 10 rebounds, four assists, and three steals for the Hawks. Wyman added eight points and seven rebounds. Hermon finishes the season with a 19-3 record and state runner up.
