UNE to make first Division III men’s hockey Frozen Four appearance

The #8 University of New England Nor’Easters knocked off the #2 Utica Pioneers 2-0 in Utica, New York Saturday afternoon in a NCAA Division III men’s ice hockey Tournament quarterfinal game. With the victory, UNE advances to their first ever Frozen Four.

The Nor’Easters (23-3-1) got a second period game winning shorthanded goal from Daniel Winslow, and a third period empty netter by Tyler Seltenreich to back a 38 save shutout performance from sophomore goaltender Billy Girard. UNE (Biddeford, Maine) has now won 13 games in a row, and will head to Lake Placid, New York on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. to face #3 SUNY Geneseo in a national semifinal at Herb Brooks Arena. The Knights of SUNY Geneseo will enter with a record of 23-3-1. In the first semifinal on Friday at 3 p.m. #1 Adrian College (29-1) will face Augsburg University (25-4). The Bulldogs of Adrian College have a 29 game winning streak after losing their first game of the season. The national title game is set for Saturday in Lake Placid with a time to be announced. UNE had made two other appearances in the NCAA Tournament in their program history prior to Saturday, but had never advanced past the quarterfinal round.
