Stony Brook takes the rubber game and the series over Maine baseball

Shane Paradine had four hits including a game winning solo homerun in the sixth inning Sunday afternoon, as the Stony Brook Seawolves took the rubber game of a three game series 8-2 over the Maine Black Bears at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.

Stony Brook (9-13, 5-1 America East) took an early 2-0 lead striking for a pair off Maine starting pitcher Brett Erwin in the top of the first inning. Stanton Leuthner hit a leadoff solo homerun to left, and Brett Paulsen singled in Ethan Giordano. The Black Bears got single runs in the second and the fifth to tie it on RBI groundouts by Jake Rainess and Jordan Schulefand. Paradine got the tiebreaker and game winner with the solo shot to leadoff the top of the sixth inning. The Seawolves added on from there with another one in the sixth on an RBI single by Cole Durkan, a Paradine sacrifice fly RBI in the seventh, and three more in the ninth on RBI hits from Leuthner, Paradine, and Giordano. The Black Bears did have chances in the sixth and seventh with two runners on and one out in each frame, but couldn’t bring anything across.

Erwin (0-3) allowed four runs on eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts in 5.2 innings in the loss. Ryan Turenne had two hits as Maine falls to 7-13, 4-2 in conference play. Quinlan Montgomery (1-0) picked up the win for Stony Brook allowing two runs on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Brendan Pattermann would pick up his second save. Paradine lead the way offensively with the four hits and three RBI, Leuthner had two hits and two RBI, while Giordano also had two hits with a run knocked in. The Black Bears will play a three game series at UMBC beginning on Friday with a 6 p.m. scheduled start time for Game 1.
