Husson Athletics: Softball splits at Thomas, baseball sweeps UMPI at home

The Husson Eagles baseball and softball teams continued their conference seasons with doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon. Husson softball was on the road at Thomas College, while baseball played host to the University of Maine-Presque Isle.

In Waterville at Thomas College- Husson got a one hit shutout from McKenna Smith in game one for a 2-0 victory, before dropping game two in nine innings 1-0. Whitney Bess reached on an error to score Katie Windsor, and Katie Raymond doubled in a run for all the offense the Eagles needed in the opener. Smith struck out 11, and didn’t allow a hit until Kelsey Currier singled to lead off the seventh. Smith also broke the program record for most strikeouts in a season when she hit 173 with her second punchout on the afternoon. Claudia Magliacci had an infield single in the ninth to score Anna Piirainen for the only run of game two to give the home Terriers the split. Smith (13-2) took the loss in the circle in relief of Jill Bisson. Husson had their 13 game win streak snapped in the loss, and suffered their first conference defeat. The Eagles are now 21-7, 8-1 in the North Atlantic Conference and will play two non-conference games at Bowdoin College on Sunday afternoon. Thomas goes to 9-15, 2-2.

At the Winkin Complex on Harold Alfond Diamond in Bangor- The Husson baseball team rolled to a pair of NAC wins over the visiting UMPI Owls by scores of 19-0 and 20-8. Austin Snow had three hits and three RBI, Tanner Evans two hits and three RBI, while Jackson Curtis added a three-run homerun and Brett Riffe a two-run shot in game one. Alex Smith (1-0) won on the mound allowing no runs on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 6.0 innings. It was another offensive explosion in the second game led by three hits and four RBI from Nick Swift, and three hits and two RBI from Logan Sheridan and Evans. Joshua Scott hit a two-run homer and had three RBI, while Austin Barron and Akira Warren had two hits a piece. Jackson Thayer (1-0) pitched the first 2.0 innings and picked the win allowing one run on two hits. Jacob Moreno had an RBI hit, Steed Outler a two-run homerun, and Timothy Burns a three-run double to lead UMPI. The Eagles are now 13-15, 5-1 in the NAC. The Owls fall to 6-21, 3-5. The teams meet again to play another doubleheader in Bangor on Sunday afternoon.
