May 16, 2022

BREWER- In the first baseball game played at Heddericg Field in almost four years, the Bangor Rams used a three run fourth inning to take the lead for good en route to a 12-4 Class A North win over the Brewer Witches on Monday night.

Bangor (9-1) would score a run in each of the first two innings for a 2-0 lead. With two outs in the top of the first, Matt Holmes would draw a walk. Holmes would advance to second base on a wild pitch by Brewer starting pitcher Grady Vanidestine, and then went to third when Vanidestine threw the ball into centerfield on an attempted pickoff play. Ryan Howard would then slap a groundball RBI single to left. The Rams picked up their run in the second when Max Clark doubled and Ben Caron singled with one out, and Colton Trisch would pick up an RBI sacrifice fly. Brewer (5-5) took their only lead of the night in the third inning. Jed Gilpatrick led it off for the Witches with a solo homerun on a 2-0 pitch to left field off Clark to slice the deficit in half. A walk to Vanidestine and two Bangor errors that allowed Rowan Valley to reach second base on a grounder hit to the shortstop Keegan Cyr would score Vanidestine to tie it. The hosts took the lead when Ethan Norwood knocked in Valley with an RBI sacrifice fly later in the inning. Bangor regained the lead for good in the fourth thanks to a pair of Brewer errors, an RBI single from Cyr, and an RBI sacrifice fly from Holmes to make it 5-3 Rams. Luke Misbrenner added to the lead with a two-run homerun in the fifth, and the guests really pulled away with one in the sixth and four more in the seventh. Brady Hand had a two-run single as part of the four run seventh, as Bangor bounced back from their first loss of the season to Old Town last time out on Friday night.

Clark got the win on the mound for Bangor allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits with five walks and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Hand reached base three times with two hits and a walk, and Cyr had two hits. Gilpatrick had a single, double, and a homer to lead Brewer in the loss. Vanidestine reached base four times with a hit, three walks, and also scored twice. Vanidestine was tagged with the defeat on the hill allowing eight runs (four earned) on seven hits with five walks and two strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Both teams are back in action on Wednesday when the Rams host Hampden Academy, and the Witches travel to MDI to battle the Trojans.
