BANGOR- The Bucksport Golden Bucks scored all four of their runs in the third inning on Tuesday evening, and hung on to defeat the Mt. View Mustangs 4-2 in the Class C Northern Maine Baseball Championship game at Mansfield Stadium.
Mt. View had the best chance early to grab a lead against Bucksport starting pitcher Jake Guty in the top of the second inning. Declan Knowlton walked, Dakota Harriman singled to left field, and Cole Ripley also drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Guty was able to escape the jam however when he struckout Calvin Jewett, got Samuel Valleau on a foul bunt popout to first baseman Gavyn Holyoke, and then struckout Bernie Dodge. The Bucks then broke through in a scoreless game against Noah Hurd in the bottom of the third. Freshman Jason Terrill led off with a single to right center, and with one out Tyler Hallett was by a pitch. Terrill and Hallett stole second and third, and Terrill would score on a passed ball. Holyoke drove in Hallett with an RBI single to center, and took second base on the throw in to the infield. Guty then slapped an RBI single to center, and after a Mt. View error that put him in scoring position Cam Rich would make it 4-0 with another single to center scoring Guty. The Mustangs responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Harriman and Ripley both walked and then advanced to second and third base on a passed ball. Jewett then hit a sharp single to right center to score both runners and cut the deficit in half. Bucksport limited the damage as Guty struckout Valleau and then got Dodge and Draedyn Furrow both on groundouts. That would end the scoring on the evening, as both pitchers went the distance only allowing a total of seven hits and striking out a combined 24 batters.
Hurd took the loss on the mound for Mt. View allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with one walk and 14 strikeouts in 6.0 innings. He struckout the side in four of the six frames he pitched. Harriman and Jewett both reached base twice with a single and a walk each, with Jewett driving in both runs. The #6 seed Mustangs finish their season at 14-6. Guty had two hits to lead Bucksport to the win, and also on the mound where he went 7.0 innings allowing two runs on three hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts. The Bucks (19-1), the #1 seed and now champion of Class C North, will face the #1 seed and champs from the South in Lisbon (20-0) on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mansfield Stadium for the State Championship.
