PVHS starts quick and rolls to season opening girls soccer victory

September 3, 2022

At Howland, Penobscot Valley scored three times in the first five minutes and never looked back, topping Piscataquis Community 9-1 in girls soccer action on Saturday

The scoring started just 1:58 into the game, when Lila Cummings sent a cross from the outside to Kaya Loring, who quickly passed the ball to a cutting Ellie Austin, who buried her shot in the back of the net.  Just 20 seconds later, Cummings attacked up the middle, passed to Rylee Moulton, who went one on one with the goalie for the score.  Moulton returned the favor a few minutes later, when she dropped a pass to Cummings outside the 18 yard line, who calmly put her shot in the upper left corner.

The other goals in the half included a long pass ahead from Loring to Moulton, who converted the breakaway for her second goal of the game. Austin set up Cumming’s second goal on a drop back pass, then Lila completed the hat trick by scoring unassisted with under five minutes to go in the half.

Ashlyn St. Cyr continued the scoring in the second half by converting a pass from Moulton. Austin scored again by finishing a Cummings assist, and Shay Ireland scored her first career goal unassisted to wrap up the Howler scoring. Goalkeeper Lauryn Smart saved four of five shots for PVHS, who open the season 1-0 and will host Searsport on Wednesday.

Senior Molly Sipple scored her team’s only goal for PCHS with 17 minutes to go in the game. Bella Buehne stopped 19 of 35 shots for the Pirates, who will travel to Dexter to face the Tigers on Thursday.
