Maine women’s soccer caps comeback to beat UMBC

The University of Maine women’s soccer team scored three goals in the final 30 minutes on Sunday afternoon, capping a 3-2 comeback win over the University of Maryland-Baltimore County at Retrievers Soccer Park in Baltimore, Maryland in America East action.

Maine dominated play in the first half on time of possession along with shots attempted and shots on goal, but UMBC scored on their only shot on goalie Kira Kutzinski when Meghan McKye tallied at 5:40 and the Retrievers had a 1-0 halftime lead. Alyssa Palmucci made it 2-0 at the 59:38 mark of the second half, before the guests started their comeback. Halle Rogers cut it to 2-1 exactly one minute later, before Saylor Clark tied it 2-2 at 69:36. Clark from a bad angle to the left of UMBC goalie Morgan McGruder, sent a shot to the opposite corner beating McGruder inside the right post. Brite Speck then had the game winner at 79:47, as Maine picked up their first conference win.

Kutzinski didn’t make any saves in the win, as UMBC scored on both shots on goal. Hannah Bamford and Delaney Labonte had assists for Maine (5-2-2, 1-0-1 America East). McGruder made nine saves in the defeat for the Retrievers (4-4-3, 0-1-1). The Black Bears had 12 shots on net. Maine returns to action Thursday night on the road at New Hampshire with a 6 p.m. kickoff.
