Husson beats UNE in football rivalry game

Tyler Thompson reeled in a game winning 40 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nic Visser in the third quarter Saturday afternoon, as the Husson University Eagles knocked off the University of New England Nor’easters 31-14 in Commonwealth Coast Conference football action at the Winkin Complex in Bangor. The rivalry game was the second annual battle for the Lobster Trap, with the Eagles keeping the trophy as they’ve taken both of the meetings thus far.

Husson (2-4, 1-1 CCC) never trailed getting a 10 yard touchdown run by Jed Lober early in the first quarter. UNE tied it on a one yard run by quarterback Jarrett Henault later in the first, before a field goal of 21 yards from Aaron Paradis gave the Eagles a 10-7 halftime lead. The game winner from Thompson came with 2:54 left in the third quarter, before the second touchdown pass of the afternoon from Visser of eight yards went to Cullen Casey just over halfway through the four quarter that made it 24-7. Tucker Buzzell wrapped up the Husson win with a late interception that he returned 35 yards for a touchdown. Henault had the only other score for the Nor’Easters on an eight yard run.

Visser finished 30-40 passing for 352 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Visser and Lober both had 58 yards rushing in the win. Lober also had five receptions for 53 yards. Thompson had seven catches for 87 yards and the big third quarter touchdown. Buzzell and Adam Bertrand were once again the defensive leaders for the Eagles. Buzzell had 10 total tackles, two for loss, and the interception return for a score. Bertrand had nine total tackles. Henault went 15-23 passing for 189 yards, but threw three interceptions in the loss for UNE. He ran 15 times for 49 yards and the two touchdowns. Mikey Brennan led the Nor’Easters in receiving with five catches for 58 yards, as their record drops to 3-2 and 1-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Husson heads back on the road to face Curry College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
