Celtics win season opener, Bruins lose for the first time

At the Canadian Tire Center in Ottawa Tuesday night, the Ottawa Senators used seven different goal scorers in sending the Boston Bruins to their first loss of the season 7-5.

Boston (3-1-0), playing their first back to back in the early season allowed three goals in each of the first two periods and dug a hole they couldn’t quite dig out of. The Bruins did tie it 3-3 early in the second on goals from David Krejci and A.J. Greer, but Ottawa (1-2-0) scored three in a row in a span of 4:32 to take a 6-3 lead in a game they never trailed. Patrice Bergeron, Nick Foligno, and David Pastrnak had the other tallies in the loss. It was the 403rd career goal for Bergeron, now third all-time in B’s history. Jeremy Swayman played the first 40 minutes in net and made 19 saves, while Linus Ullmark played the third and made five stops. Boston will host the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night at TD Garden.

At TD Garden in Boston, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown led five scorers in double figures with 35 points each as the Boston Celtics opened their season with a 126-117 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday.

It a tight first 24 minutes that went to the halftime break tied 63-63, Boston took the lead for good on a Tatum turnaround jumper with 9:16 left in the third quarter and eventually built the biggest advantage of the night at 16. Tatum added 12 rebounds, four assists, one steal, and one block to his point total while Brown had three rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block. Malcolm Brogdon had 16 points, Grant Williams 15, and Marcus Smart 14 in the victory which was the first head coaching win for interim Joe Mazzulla. James Harden had 35 points, and Joel Embiid had 26 with 15 rebounds in the loss for Philadelphia. The Celtics first road trip of the season begins Friday in a rematch of last years Eastern Conference Finals when they head to South Beach to battle the Miami Heat. Before the game with the 76ers, the Boston Celtics paid tribute to Hall of Famer Bill Russell. Russell, who passed away at the age of 88 back on July 31, played 13 seasons in the organization winning 11 titles.
