Husson men’s and women’s soccer win East Division Championship, advance to NAC Title games

The Husson University men’s and women’s soccer teams hosted the North Atlantic Conference East Division Championship on Boucher Field at Husson University in Bangor on Sunday afternoon.

In the men’s game- Miguel Morales scored with 27:04 to go as the Eagles came back to slip past the Terriers 2-1. Husson dominated all match long, attempting 29 shots to just six for Thomas (9-3 on goal). TC though had the early lead on a goal by Eric Labrie in the 14th minute of the first half. Arni Hreidarsson tied it 8:07 into the second half, before Morales notched the game winner almost 10 minutes later. Tyler Welch assisted on the Morales goal, as Husson takes the East Division crown improving to 14-3-2. Alex Rechsteiner made two saves in net in the victory, while Jayce Nielsen made seven in the loss for Thomas College. The Terriers end their season at 7-7-4.

In the women’s game- Natalie Aviolla scored a game winning goal early in the second half, as Husson beat Maine Maritime Academy 3-1. After a scoreless first 45 minutes, Willow Whitten put the Eagles ahead by scoring 2:39 into the second half. Aviolla tallied almost five minutes later that turned out to be the difference maker. The Mariners did slice it to 2-1 on a penalty kick goal by Emma White with 9:19 left to play, before Marila Corletto put it away with 4:15 remaining. Addi Laslie added one assist in the victory, and Madison Weigler made one save in net. Husson improves to 11-6-1, winning their sixth consecutive game. Bess MacArthur made six stops in the loss for MMA, who finished their season at 7-9-1.

The Husson men’s and women’s soccer teams now advance to the NAC Championship next Saturday afternoon at Boucher Field when both squads take on West winner SUNY-Delhi. The men play at 11 a.m., followed by the women’s contest at 1:30. The winner of those games get an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
