Maine tops Division 3 UMFK in home opener

The University of Maine men’s basketball team put three players in double figures on Friday night, and rolled to a 90-45 non-conference win over the University of Maine-Fort Kent in the home opener at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

UMFK (1-1) stayed with Maine over the first 8:37 of action, as a three-pointer by Jordan Guerrero cut an early Black Bears lead to 18-12. The hosts took off after that and weren’t challenged, ending the first half on a 30-8 run to open up a 48-20 lead at the break. Maine would lead by as many as 46 late in the game in improving to 1-1 in the early season.

Peter Filipovity led the way in the win with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Gedi Juozapaitis had 15 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Kellen Tynes rounded out the double figure scorers with 14 points, six assists, and seven steals. Maine put 12 players in the scorebook. Guerrero had 13 points in the loss for UMFK, while Nate Huynh added 12. The Black Bears shot 56% from the floor, as compared to 29% for the Bengals. Maine is back in action Monday night with a trip to Chestnut Hill to take on ACC opponent Boston College at 6 p.m.
