Adam Savage accounted for all three of his teams touchdowns and had a key interception late, in leading the Skowhegan Riverhawks to a 20-14 win over the Portland Bulldogs in the Class B football state championship game played at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland on Saturday afternoon.
A 40 yard touchdown pass by Savage to Quintcey McCray with eight seconds left in the second quarter turned out to be the game winner. Savage had scored on a one yard run and tossed a 10 yard score to Tyler Annis also in the first half, as Skowhegan led 20-6 at halftime. Kennedy Charles scored both Portland touchdowns on runs of 44 yards and then a four yarder with 40 seconds left in the third quarter. Savage secured the win by intercepting Charles late in the game and had a good return off the turnover, as the Riverhawks (10-1) were able to run out the clock to win their first state championship since 1978.
