BREWER- The Penobscot Pioneers, a co-op varsity girls ice hockey team, made history on Friday evening. The Pioneers became the first girls varsity program north of Winslow to play in an Maine Principals’ Association sanctioned game. Penobscot started their season off on the right foot, blanking Greely/Gray-New Gloucester 12-0 at the Penobscot Ice Arena.
The team is made up of players from seven different area high schools including Bangor, Brewer, Hampden Academy, Orono, Old Town, Hermon, and John Bapst. The Pioneers started quickly before a big crowd, tallying six times in the first 9:27 of the first period. Bella Saucier became the first player in program history to score, as she found the net on a wrist shot from outside the right faceoff circle 1:57 into the game, part of a nine goal opening stanza for Penobscot.
Meaghan Delahanty led the way with two goals and three assists, Paige Oakes had two goals and two assists, Emma McNeil had two goals and one assist, while Delaney Carr had three assists on the night. Orono freshman Abbie Derosier was not tested in net in picking up the victory. The Pioneers next play a week from tomorrow (Saturday, December 3) on the road against Gorham at 6:30 p.m.
