The University of Maine men’s and women’s basketball teams were both looking to break three game losing streaks on Thursday night at Memorial Gymnasium in Orono. The men’s team hosted USCAA member in the University of Maine-Augusta, while the women’s team faced Atlantic 10 opponent Fordham.
In the men’s game, UMaine got off to a sluggish start but scored 55 second half points and would roll to a 103-67 win over UMaine-Augusta. Five players scored in double figures led by Peter Filipovity who had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jaden Clayton and Gedi Juozapaitis had 14 points each, Ja’Shon Wright-McLeish put in 13 points, and Kellen Tynes rounded out the double digit scorers with 12 points. Elijah Smith and Fraser MacDonald both had 17 points for the Moose. UMA, who plays in the Yankee Small College Conference, falls to 6-7 on the season. The Black Bears improve to 5-4 and will be on the road at Merrimack College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
In the women’s game, Asiah Dingle hit a go ahead three-pointer with 5:17 left to play and Fordham scratched out a 57-51 victory over Maine. In what was a close game throughout, the Black Bears didn’t score a point over the final 5:38 in losing their fourth straight game falling to 3-7. Adrianna Smith led the way in the loss with a career high 22 points, while adding 11 rebounds and seven assists. It is the third double double on the season for Smith. Olivia Rockwood was the only other in double figures with 11 points and five rebounds. Caroline Bornemann fell just short of a double double by putting in nine points and hauling in nine rebounds. The Stony Brook transfer Dingle led Fordham (6-4) with 17 points. Former Greely High star and Miss Maine Basketball Anna Dewolfe returned to her home state for the first time in her college career and had 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Maine returns to action on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they host Army.
