Howlers defense leads to their second straight win

January 10, 2023

The Penobscot Valley boys basketball team came into their home contest versus Schenck Monday with a modest 3-5 record. Their lack of wins however didn’t appear to be due to a lack of effort on the defensive end, as they only had one opponent score over 39 points all season. The Howlers relied on their defense once again, this time knocking off the Wolverines by a 50-33 score.

Neither team was lighting it up early, as Schenck led 8-7 after the first quarter. Nate Scharff carried the load for PVHS, scoring five of his team’s seven while Colin Harding scored the other basket. Ryan Ingalls netted five points in the frame for Schenck, while freshman Gage Brown knocked down a three-pointer. The second quarter went back and forth, with Mason McDunnah giving Schenck a one-point edge with a driving baseline layup just seven seconds left before the horn. Gabe Reed pushed the ball up the floor in a hurry though, and nailed an off-balance 3-pointer as time expired giving PVHS a two point lead at the break.

Penobscot Valley was able to get a little separation in the third quarter, outscoring the Wolverines 15-8 and taking a nine point lead. Senior captains Reed and Isaac Doore were key during the frame, combining for 11 of those 15 points. Nick Powers did his best to keep his team in it for Schenck, as he scored five points. Tough defense, timely baskets, and free throws (7-9 from the line in the fourth) allowed the Howlers to close out the game.

Three seniors led the way with 11 points each for PVHS in Reed, Doore, and Scharff.  Kaden Loring dropped in six, Caleb Moon had five, while Harding and Noah Austin each scored three. Austin’s points were his first of his young varsity career. The Howlers improve to 4-5, and will host Greenville at 12:30 on Saturday.

Schenck was paced by Ingalls who had 12 points and McDunnah who had eight. Other Wolverine scorers were Powers (5), Brown (3), Brayden Osbourne (3), and Brady McAvoy (2).  The Wolverines drop to 6-2, and will host Penquis on Wednesday.
