The Husson University Eagles and UMaine-Farmington Beavers played a men’s and women’s North Atlantic Conference basketball home and home over the weekend. Husson would get the sweep on the women’s side to stay unbeaten in conference play, while UMF swept the Eagles on the men’s side.
In the women’s game Friday evening at Farmington- Husson built a 22 point halftime lead and would roll to an 87-51 win over UMF. Bailey Donovan led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds, Hannah Richards had 10 points, Lauren Cook and Sophia McVicar had nine points a piece, and Jordyn Lengle added eight points and seven rebounds. The Eagles hit 15-33 (45.5%) from three-point range, as Cook and McVicar had three a piece. Maddy White had 16 points and Grace Dwyer had 12 for the Beavers.
On Saturday afternoon at Newman Gymnasium in Bangor- Husson built another huge halftime lead this time by a score of 52-17, and put 12 players in the scorebook to sweep the weekend 101-36 over UMF. Donovan had 16 points and Vanessa Duarte had 14 to lead all scorers. Makaelyn Porter, Maci Beals, and Cook had nine points a piece, Faith Sjoberg, Sydney Loring, and Lengle had eight points each, while Richards and Lacey Scanlon had seven a piece. The Eagles shot 55% from the floor to improve to 12-5 and 7-0 in the NAC. White had 10 points and Dwyer had eight in the defeat for the Beavers, as they fall to 2-15 and 1-7 in the conference.
In the men’s game Friday night in Farmington- UMF ended the first half on a 20-6 run for an 11 point halftime lead and then held off Husson 82-76, sending the Eagles to their first conference loss. Jeremy Moronta led the guests in the loss with 18 points and nine rebounds, Justice Kendall had 17 points, Scott Lewis 15 points and six rebounds, and Eric Ahlers added 11 points. Terion Moss led all scorers with 24 points for the Beavers. Jake Kane had 22 points and nine rebounds, and Kyle Donlin had a double double with 14 points and 13 boards.
On Saturday evening at Newman Gymnasium in Bangor- UMF had a huge second half, breaking open a one point halftime edge by outscoring Husson 47-30 to sweep the weekend 76-58. Moss led all scorers again for the Beavers with 27 points and five rebounds (19 of those points in the second half). Kane had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Zachary Mickle added 11 points and five rebounds. Kendall was the only double figure scorer for Husson with 15 points, as the Eagles see their record drop to 7-11 and now 5-2 in the NAC. UMF gains first place in the conference at 11-7 overall, and 7-1 in league play.
Both Husson teams are at Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday, before a home and home with Thomas College next Friday and Saturday.
