Reed leads Penobscot Valley boys to a win over PCHS

January 22, 2023

At Guilford, senior Gabe Reed scored a game-high 15 points as Penobscot Valley grinded out a 43-28 win over PCHS Friday evening. In addition to shouldering a bulk of the scoring, Reed was also assigned to cover talented freshman Brady Gaw for the entire 32 minutes.

The first quarter started off very slow, with neither team able to get in a rhythm offensively. Just six points were scored during those eight minutes, with Gaw and Dawson Simpson each scoring baskets for the Pirates, and Reed and Colin Harding each sinking a free throw. A 5-3 run to start the second opened up a 9-6 lead for PCHS, but those were the only points they would score in the half. The Howlers would run off 13 straight points to carry a 19-9 lead into the locker room. Reed was instrumental during the frame scoring nine points.

The Pirates outpaced the Howlers in the third, outscoring them 11-8 and reducing the deficit to seven points making it 27-20. In the fourth, the patience of Penobscot Valley forced PCHS to increase the intensity and pressure defensively, but ultimately led to committing fouls. PVHS was 14-16 at the free throw line in the quarter to ice the game.

The Howlers received scoring contributions from six players. In addition to the 15 from Reed, other point totals included nine from Harding, Colin Dunn with seven, Isaac Doore and Nate Scharff with five a piece, and two from Kaden Loring. Doore and Loring also brought down eight rebounds each. Penobscot Valley improved to 6-6 and will face Penquis in Milo on Monday.

Piscataquis Community (5-6) had four players in the scoring column, including Scott Chadbourne with 13, Gaw (9), Simpson (4), and Noah Kain (2). The Pirates host Stearns on Monday.
