O’Brien officially named as Patriots offensive coordinator

January 26, 2023

The New England Patriots officially announced on Thursday morning the hiring of Bill O’Brien as their offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. O’Brien is set to replace Matt Patricia and Joe Judge who served as offensive coordinators this past season, as New England saw a big decline in offensive production from 2021 to 2022 after Josh McDaniels left to become head coach for the Vegas Raiders after the 2021 season.

O’Brien is no stranger to the Patriots system having coached on the staff from 2007 to 2011, with his last season being offensive coordinator. The status of Patricia and Judge remain unclear, but some indicate at least Patricia could be on the way out. Head Coach Bill Belichik released a statement on the hiring of O’Brien saying, “I am looking forward to working with Bill again. He is an outstanding coach and an asset to our staff.”

After leaving the Patriots in 2012 to become the head coach of Penn State, O’Brien coached the Houston Texans from 2014 through 2020 before working as Alabama’s offensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022.
