At Howland Monday night, the Penobscot Valley boys basketball team was able to get seven or more points from five different players en route to a 57-38 win over Mattanawcook Academy. The defense was also a main storyline, as for the 14th time in 17 games PVHS held their opponent to 40 points or less.
The Howlers jumped out to a 14-10 lead after one quarter with Nate Scharff, Colin Dunn, and Colin Harding netting four points each. Joe Vicaire and Andrew Oliver each notched a 3-pointer and a two point basket during the frame for Mattanawcook. The PVHS defense created turnovers in the second quarter, leading to some fast break layups and helping them extend their lead to 30-15 going into halftime. Gabe Reed knocked down two three-pointers in the period.
Six points from Reed and eight from Caleb Moon paced the Howlers in the second half, as they were able to keep the Lynx at bay. Carson Munson did his best to keep MA in the game by connecting on 3 three-pointers and scoring all of his 11 points in the third period but it wasn’t quite enough on this night.
Reed led PVHS in scoring with 12 points, and also dished out five assists. Dunn and Scharff scored double digits with 11 and 10 points respectively, while Moon put in eight of his own. Isaac Doore had an impressive stat line of seven points, four assists, and nine steals on the evening, while Harding and Kaden Loring rounded out the scoring with five and four points each. The Howlers improve to 9-8 on the season, and will celebrate the seniors at their last game of the regular season on Wednesday at home against Bangor Christian.
Mattanawcook Academy was led in scoring by the freshman Oliver, who hit 3 three-pointers and tallied a game-high 13 points. Munson finished with 11, Vicaire had eight, and James Trott and Avery Jordan had four and two points respectively. The Lynx drop to 2-15, and will wrap up their season at home against Sumner on Tuesday.
