Gudroe, Dean, Dexter defense helps Tigers roll to Senior Night win

February 6, 2023

DEXTER- Cally Gudroe and Hannah Dean combined for 34 points on Monday night, as the Dexter Tigers also used a smothering defense en route to a 50-30 victory over the Central Red Devils in a Class C North girls basketball matchup on Senior Night at Ed Guiski Gymnasium.

Central would never lead in this one, and a 9-0 Dexter run in the first quarter forced a Red Devils timeout as the Tigers opened up an early 11-2 advantage. Dean had seven of those nine during the run, and Jozylnn Paige helped that with four assists in that opening eight minutes. Central scored five in a row after that timeout on a three-pointer by Izzy Allen and a basket from her younger sister Mary, but that four point deficit is as close as they’d be the rest of the evening. Dexter had four different scorers in the second, as the hosts would take a comfortable 29-16 lead to the halftime break as Gudroe and Dean combined to score 20 of their first 22 points. Gudroe had five of the first eight points of the third quarter, as the Tigers put it away with an 8-0 run for a 21 point cushion. They led by as many as 22, and Central never got closer than 14 the rest of the second half.

Izzy Allen led Central with 19 points and five rebounds, with many of those made very tough by the Dexter defense. Mary Allen added six points, five rebounds, and two assists. Also scoring was Rylee Speed with three points and two steals, and Emilee Shaw with two points. The Red Devils had 13 rebounds and shot 7-9 from the free throw line. Gudroe led Dexter (16-1) with 18 points, two rebounds, and three assists. Dean finished with 16 points and five rebounds. Also scoring was Abilene Corson and Mazie Peach who both had four points and four rebounds, Jillean Poliquin also had four points, and Paige and Desiree Adams had two points a piece. Paige contributed six assists. The Tigers had 22 rebounds and shot 6-9 from the foul line. Dexter finishes their regular season on Thursday night at 6:30 when they travel to take on Class B Foxcroft Academy, a contest you can watch live on Eastern Maine Sports Media on YouTube with the pregame starting at 6:15. Central finishes their regular season at 15-3, with two losses to Dexter and one to Mattanawcook.
